This 5 day adventure Choquequirao tour  is a great adventure trek, which combines many varied landscapes of Cusco region. The Choquequirao tour allows hikers to challenge into this amazing site called the sister city of Machu Picchu. The ancient Inca Citadel of Choquequirao, which is an extraordinary archaeological complex, perched on a ledge high above the Apurimac Canyon.

The Choquequirao tour  is not crowded as the Inca Trail, is a very good alternative trek and is open any time of the year. Choquequirao means “Cradle of Gold” in Quechua the language of the Incas.

Choquequirao is composed of an amazing and very extensive set of farming terraces, smaller religious temples and an administrative area with a total dimension of over 1750 hats.

Itinerary

Choquequirao Tour – Itinerary

First day: Cusco – San Pedro de Cachora – Playa Rosalinas

In Cusco at the scheduled time, travelers will be picked up from their hotels. The trip starts with 4 hours drive to Cachora, the beginning point of our Choquequirao tour . We will have breakfast at the house of our horseman. The first part of the hike is 3 hours on a gentle path until to arrive to the lookout point of Capuliyoc. From here is visible the Apurimac canyon and the snow-capped peaks of Vilcabamba Mountain range.

After a few hours walking down-hill, we will arrive to Cocamasana for lunch. On the opposite side of the canyon, you can see Choquequirao on the far side of the valley. The places around Choquequirao are rich in life and its possible to see a great variety of flora and fauna typical of this region. After lunch, we will walk for three more hours to arrive at the first camp at Playa Rosalinas, which is located 100 meters away from Apurimac River.

Second day: Playa Rosalinas – Choquequirao

Today is probably one of the hardest days of the Choquequirao tour. The up-hill hike on the sandy path will be approximately 5 hours to reach Marampata (lookout point for Choquequirao tour) . We will be ascending 1600m over a distance of 18km / 11.2 miles through hot and humid conditions. This portion of trekking is rigorous. But the views we get along the way mixed with the wide variety of flora and fauna makes it worth it.

After lunch at Marampata, we will walk for another 2 hours to the base camp of Choquequirao. Throughout the day we will see a great variety of orchids, bromeliads and different types  of bamboos; we’ll also hopefully see birds such as Quetzals, Toucans and a variety of hummingbirds.

Third day: Choquequirao full day exploring.      

The third day of Choquequirao tour   starts with a delicious breakfastToday you will have a guided tour to all the main places of interest throughout lower Choquequirao. After lunch, there will be plenty of time to explore the upper Choquequirao with our guide. Choquequirao is composed of an amazing and extensive set of agriculture terraces, religious and administrative sites with a total area of over 1800 hectares.

There are amazing irrigation water channels and all of this set in the dramatic setting of the steep Apurimac Canyon.

Four day: Choquequirao – Cocamasana

After a delicious breakfast at the camp, we will head back to Marampata village and later down to Apurimac Canyon. The descend hike to the canyon will last approximately 4 hours. At la Playa Rosalinas is the lunch spot, there will be time for a refreshing bath in the Apurimac River, the sacred river of the locals.

In the afternoon, we will walk up-hill for approx.3 hours to arrive in Cocamasana.

Five day: Cocamasana – Cachora – Cusco.

On the final morning of our Choququirao tour, we leave the Camp after breakfast. The hike up-hill is for 3 hours, we will reach the lookout place of Capuliyoc. Here there will be a little break to enjoy the wonderful scenery. Afterwards we hike to Cachora which is the end of our Choquequirao tour.
We will enjoy lunch in Cachora and be picked up by our transportation. We will travel 4 hours back to Cusco
